Top Mistakes to Avoid When Booking a Family Photographer

Booking a family photographer is an exciting step—after all, these photos will become treasured memories for years to come. But with so many options out there, it’s easy to make a few missteps that can leave you feeling disappointed with the results. To help you get the most out of your session, here are the top mistakes to avoid when booking a family photographer (and how to choose the right photographer for your family in the Hunter Valley or Central Coast)

1. Choosing on Price Alone

It’s tempting to go with the cheapest option, but when it comes to family photography, you often get what you pay for. A photographer with experience knows how to work with kids, capture candid moments, and deliver high-quality images that last a lifetime. Instead of focusing only on price, look for value: What’s included in the session? Do you receive edited family photos, an online album, or unlimited photos taken?

2. Not Checking Experience or Style

Every family photographer has a unique style. Some focus on formal portraits, while others (like us!) specialise in relaxed, natural family photography filled with laughter and real connection. Before booking, always check the photographer’s portfolio to make sure their work matches the vibe you’re looking for. With over 18 years of experience photographing families in the Hunter Valley and Central Coast, I know how to create sessions that feel fun, easy, and stress-free.

3. Forgetting About Location

Location matters more than you think. The backdrop sets the tone for your photos—whether it’s the rolling vineyards of the Hunter Valley, a favourite Central Coast beach, or even your own backyard. Many people forget to ask if travel is included. With me, travel across the Hunter Valley and Central Coast is always included, so you can choose a spot that feels special to your family. If you would like some more privacy then book a session with me at Long Acre (like the barn photo below)

4. Not Asking About What’s Included

Some families assume they’ll receive all the photos from their session, only to find out later that they have to pay extra. When booking a photographer, always check what’s included in the package. For some of my sessions, you’ll receive up to 30 professionally edited family photos, plus unlimited shots taken during the session. That way, you know exactly what you’re getting—no hidden costs or surprises.

5. Overlooking Flexibility

Life happens—kids get sick, weather changes, or schedules shift. Make sure your photographer offers flexible rescheduling options. With my sessions, if the weather doesn’t play nice or you need to move your date, we’ll simply find a new time that works. No stress, no fuss.

6. Ignoring the Fun Factor

The biggest mistake? Choosing a photographer who makes your session feel stiff and awkward. The best family photos come from genuine smiles, playful prompts, and natural connection. My approach is always fun, easy-going, and relaxed—perfect for families with kids of all ages. You can see more of my family photography at Hunter Valley Family Photos

Final Thoughts

Booking a family photographer should feel exciting, not stressful. By avoiding these common mistakes, you’ll ensure a smooth, enjoyable experience and walk away with photos you’ll treasure forever.

If you’re looking for a family photographer in the Hunter Valley or Central Coast, I’d love to create a session that’s fun, natural, and all about capturing the real you.
